JIMMY CARTER

JIMMY CARTER our 39th President is the oldest living former U. S. President as well as the longest lived. No former president has lived to be 99. On October 1, 2024 he will be 100. As we mark his 100th birthday, lets look back at the life of our 39th President.
He was born October 1, 1924 he served as State Senator for four years before being elected as the 76th Governor of Georgia, which he served from 1971-1975. In 1976, he was elected as the 39th President of the United States of America.
One of Carters first acts as President was issuing an executive order declaring unconditional amnesty for Vietnam War-era draft evaders. Carter’s tenure in office was marked by many economic wows. It was a time of continuing inflation and recession, not to mention the 1979 energy crisis. His final year in office was marred by the Iran Hostage Crisis, which contributed to his losing the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan. In which, he only won 4 of the 50 states.
His first include:

  • First President born in Georgia.
  • First President who was born in a hospital
  • First President born after World War I
  • First President to graduate from the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1947)
  • First President to appoint a Secretary of Education (and the first woman)
  • First President to visit Nigeria and Guadeloupe while in office
  • First President to appoint a woman to be Secretary of Commerce
  • First President who completed at least one full term in office and never made a nomination to the U. S. Supreme Court
  • First President to have hosted an official papal visit at the White House. In 1979, Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit a sitting President at the White House.
  • First President to visit North Korea (post-office on a diplomatic mission).
  • First living former President to have an official White House ornament
  • First President to live to the age 95.
  • First President to have been married 77 years. They were married 77 years, 135 days at the time of Rosalynn’s death.

  • Since he left office, he has become more popular in the public's eyes. Often seen at Habitat For Humanity home building events swinging a hammer well into his 90’s. He outlived his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, who passed away shortly after he went into hospice. Despite being in hospice over a year, President Carter continues to survive.
